The very first thing you must do is empty your closet. Take an inventory of everything you have. Make 4 piles of what to keep, give away to family or friends, sell and donate. Now for the hard part, you must get rid of what you don't want.
A lot of people use the one Year Rule: if you havent worn it in the past year, toss it out. Some people will keep clothes or items they havent used for more than one year, this is a good time frame that works well for some, but not all.
Now, you'll want to think about each section of the closet and how you want to organize everything that you're planning on putting back. Make a note of everything you're keeping, and keep like items together.
Example: sweaters with sweaters, dresses with dresses, pants with pants etc. Labels are a good idea if you're using shelves and or bins to help get your closet organized.
After you've sorted and categorized everything, begin putting them back in your closet so it makes the most sense to you. Example: arrange your clothes by garment type or by season or color or by practicality. You could have one section for the special occasions, one for everyday, one for work, one for play.
If you don't have sufficient space, think about investing in some plastic container bins, shelves and shoe racks to help you arrange shoes, sweaters, exercise clothing or any other items.
You can also make use of the back of the closet door for hanging ties, scarves, belts, purses or any other accessories. You can also add another clothes rod. If you hang your clothes by height you will gain some valuable space.
Having an organized closet will save you time and lower your stress since you will know exactly where to find everything as well as where to put them back. You may also discover you're saving money by not buying items you already own now that you can see everything in your closet.
The best thing of all, your new, clean and organized closet will certainly make it a joy getting dressed each morning.
