What makes de-cluttering easy? It’s having a simple plan.  Making a plan will allow you to
De-clutter Any Room Quickly
check on the step by step progress that you have done so far. In this chapter, I will explain to you the idea of having 4 boxes at the ready for you to start clearing up the clutter in your home or business. We will categorize these boxes into the sell, donate, throw out and “belongs in a different room” containers. For each room, you would initially sort any items that you know fit into one of those categories.

Choose one room at a time, as an example go into your bedroom and place items that you no longer need into the 4 boxes that we have. Browse your closet and see if there are any hanging clothes that you have not used in the last 12 months. You can then move the hanging pieces until they are hung the way you want them to be. A great trick is to keep them day-coded, hang the clothes that you have aligned in a way that will mimic the days in a week. Next, begin on the clothes that are folded and start putting the ones that are no longer of use in any of the 4 boxes that best fits their category.

Another trick to improve the time you spend each morning preparing for work is to pick out the clothes that you will be wearing for the next 3 days. This will only take you 5-10 minutes and will make your life easier. The process could save you over 30 minutes in the next 3 mornings just by taking the 5 or 10 minutes right now.

Straighten out any items on your night table. Keep the surfaces in your bedroom clear of any unnecessary items; keep things that are out on display to a minimum. This alone will make your rooms look less cluttered. Move any unrelated materials out of the bedroom into your “belongs in a different room” box or just relocate them to the ideal areas of your home.

It’s great to think about zones when you are reorganizing any space. By organizing zones in each room, you will be giving yourself a logical order to keep things in. It’s amazing how any room can be rezoned into different areas without adding to the clutter just by applying this simple trick. Take some time out to think about what each area is used for or could be used for.

So after you have thoroughly been through your bedroom, move to the next room, say the kitchen. Place the four boxes there and go through the same process, first placing anything that will go into the boxes in the appropriate one. Next, sort through the counter tops, kitchen table and your island if you have one and put everything back in its appropriate place. Take items that do not belong in the kitchen either straight out or into its box. Place the appliances that you have back to their rightful storage areas and neatly wrap their electrical cords. If there is a certain appliance that always ends up on the countertop, opt to move it to an easier-to-reach spot in your kitchen cabinets.

It’s important to note that you must finish de-cluttering each room before you move on to the next. You would not want to keep repeating what you have done throughout this task so make sure you accomplish de-cluttering and clearing each room before starting on the next, and if you are able to, it is preferable that you get one room done in one session.

If you find items in your home that no longer fit into your new uncluttered look, but that also don't belong in one of your boxes, then I suggest you work on having one area that will store all of those things. This can be the attic or the garage depending on your choice and home capacity. Whichever of the two you choose, this room should be the one sorted out last, as this is where you will store all the other equipment and items that do not belong elsewhere.
